Who We Are
Just Have A Ball is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises the awareness of play as a way to combat childhood obesity in Mississippi. In 2007, the Child and Youth Prevalence of Overweight Survey (CAYPOS) found that 25.3 percent of Mississippi elementary students grades K-5 are obese with another 18.3 percent overweight.
What We Do
In an assembly format, Just Have A Ball promotes to Mississippi elementary students the advantages of play and the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. Each student takes home a sports ball that does not require other equipment. Balls are also given to the Physical Education program to assist them in meeting the Mississippi Healthy Students Act mandate of 150 minutes per week of activity based instruction. In addition, Just Have A Ball supports the Office of Healthy School’s initiative to promote family and community involvement in the school environment. Since its inception in January 2008, Just Have A Ball has given approximately 5,700 Mississippi elementary students a sports ball.
Our Mission
The mission of Just Have A Ball is to increase the opportunities for Mississippi elementary students to be physically active. Just Have A Ball is a simple, but effective tool for combating childhood obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that young people say they like physical activity because it is fun. Just Have A Ball supports a child’s natural tendency towards play as a method for staying physically fit and active. Exercise sounds hard and daunting, but play is fun and accomplishes the same results! Research confirms that play not only keeps our children happy and healthy, but it also helps to stimulate brain development and attentiveness in children. Play also promotes social interaction that leads to skill development in coping, conflict resolution, creative thinking, communication, and imagination.
Furthermore, volunteer spokespersons – such as current and former professional athletes – reinforce the importance of play and motivate children to participate in this effort. We have all witnessed the excitement and joy of a child when presented with a gift. Just Have A Ball uses this simple foundation to expose children to healthy lifestyles. The gift is reinforced with simple instructions on how to play and endorsed by credible figures.
How We Measure Success
In conjunction with the Office of Healthy Schools, Just Have A Ball provides lesson plans to the Physical Education (or designated teacher) on ways the students can play and contests to engage the students in by using their sports balls.
The program is also measured by working with the school’s wellness coordinator, nurse (or designated employee) and community leaders to survey the students and schools.
Background
Youth Philanthropists Wilson (10 years old) and Hartwell (seven years old) Furr founded Just Have A Ball. Positive leaders with a sense of social responsibility, they identified a need in their community and through Just Have A Ball, they are addressing the need and seeking a solution.
Wilson and Hartwell are Peer to Peer Just Have A Ball Assembly Speakers. The Mississippi Preventing Obesity with Every Resource (POWER) Project recommends in their 2007 Environmental Scan of Childhood Obesity Efforts strategies that youth engage in planning and delivering programs. The report specifically states that youth can best reach their peers.
Youth philanthropy has a proven, substantial impact on participants and communities.

The Roller Skating Association International (RSA) is holding their second
annual Skate A Million Miles event to promote a healthy lifestyle. The
event will focus on the health benefits of roller skating.
In the spring, skaters
across the country were asked to register for the event at their local skating
center. 10,000 skaters, skating at least five times throughout the event, is
what is needed to help the RSA get to the overall goal of one million miles
skated.
Roller skating is also a unique way to achieve health benefits while having
fun. The average person can burn 350 calories by skating at a rate of six
miles per hour. This number increases to 600 calories if the person averages
10 miles within the hour. This is the basic equivalent of calories burned in
jogging. Roller skating is also recommended by the American Heart
Association as an aerobic fitness sport.
The dates of Skate A Million Miles coincide with the National President's
Challenge so participants can log their time spent roller skating as one of
their activities in working to achieve the President's Active Lifestyle
Award (PALA.) For more information on the National President's Challenge
please visit

The United States Youth Cricket Association is a non-profit network of volunteer organizations that promote good health and an active lifestyle for children by donating cricket sets and instruction to local elementary and middle schools. The USYCA will be bringing our great sport to over 100,000 American children in the next year. Although there is some standing around, to play cricket you need to be fit and strong, and have good hand?eye coordination and ball-handling skills. Cricket involves sprinting between wickets and running to stop balls, as well as bowling and throwing. Health benefits include:
- Increased endurance and stamina
- Improved balance and coordination
- Improved hand?eye coordination
- Greater overall physical fitness
Here's the way our schools program works:
We deliver and donate equipment to a school; it is theirs for as long as they want it. We will come to the school on an agreed-upon day to instruct any adults that want to learn the game, and then stay to help teach a class or two, resolve any questions that may come up, etc. After that day we will remain available to the school should questions arise, requests for additional information, or assistance, if equipment needs replacing. We also have brochures for the staff and giveaway bookmarks for the children, along with information for their parents, and resources should they wish to acquire their own cricket sets to play with at home.
We teach the game with just the basics, so as to avoid confusing the children with "grown up rules," and to allow the instructors the greatest possible flexibility. We use soft balls, so there's almost no risk of injury. The object is to give the children a fun, easy-to-learn game that they can master quickly and then just enjoy. The game is easily modified for indoor or outdoor play, and can be adapted to any playing surface. Cricket, the world's second-most popular sport, can also be used to promote a greater understanding of international cultures as children learn about cricket-playing nations and their players.
The USYCA offers to set up any school or program with cricket at no cost to the receiving school, and we will also bring cricket to summer programs and camps if so desired.

The Washington Health Foundation (WHF) was established in 1992, with the dream of creating an organization that could inspire new ways to promote health in communities across Washington State. During its early years, WHF primarily invested in creating sustainable health care in rural communities through grants, technical assistance and research, and helped save rural health care in many communities across the state.
While WHF initially focused on these needs and challenges of rural health care, it soon took strides into broader questions of health and the needs of urban communities as well. In 1995, WHF provided funds and technical assistance to Spokane for a Healthy Communities project. Later that year, the Foundation assumed responsibility for a series of local health access programs serving 10,000 people in the greater Seattle area. Through these and other expansions, WHF soon became the largest general purpose not-for-profit foundation working for better health within Washington State.
When we all take the small steps we can to make improvements in Healthy Systems and Healthy Living, Washington will become the Healthiest State in the Nation!

We believe that to end childhood obesity we need to start in our very own communities, in the place where children spend most of their day - our public elementary schools. We believe our pro-active approach is moving students in the right direction with results that can be measured in the short term. We believe that by joining forces with all aspects of a community to make physical education standards a priority once again we will be poised to take control of this epidemic our children and grandchildren now face. We believe that with grassroots efforts such as ours in every community that facilities like 1/8-mile tracks & athletic fields at elementary schools will halt and reverse the current trends. And finally, we believe that it is key in our combined efforts to bring about a renewed awareness of the President's Challenge among elementary school-aged children and their families will ultimately result in success nationwide.
By building these facilities and implementing programs such as those of the Council we can and will make a difference in millions of young lives. For more information please visit our website at
